R1 — Lakebase & Per-Service Best Practices

Why this module exists

Two gaps this module fills.

Lakebase got one glossary entry. R0 tells you Lakebase is "a fully managed Postgres database integrated into the Databricks platform" and moves on. That's enough to nod in a meeting. It is not enough to answer "when would you use it, and what breaks when you do?" — which is exactly the question an interviewer or an architect will ask. Lessons 1 and 2 go deep: the Neon architecture, synced tables, connection pooling, and the honest list of what doesn't work yet.

Best practices are scattered. The docs' optimization guidance lives on a dozen pages — liquid clustering here, warehouse sizing there, Auto Loader production notes somewhere else. Lessons 3 and 4 collect the current, doc-verified recommendations per service, with the numbers attached (the 10-concurrent-queries rule, the 1 TB partitioning threshold, the 70% serverless standard-mode saving). E6 and E7 teach you how Spark tuning works; this module is the review pass — what Databricks says you should do, service by service.

Like R0, this is built to be listened to end to end — a best-practices sweep for a commute, and a fast review the night before an interview or a design meeting.

Lessons

  1. Lakebase: what it is and how it's built — managed Postgres, the Neon lineage, safekeepers/pageservers, branching, scale-to-zero, versions and extensions.
  2. Lakebase: lakehouse integration and gotchas — synced tables and their three modes, online feature stores, transaction-mode pooling, when not to use it.
  3. Storage and warehouse best practices — Delta Lake layout (liquid clustering, predictive optimization, deletion vectors, MERGE), Photon, and SQL warehouse sizing and caching.
  4. Pipeline, job, and governance best practices — Auto Loader in production, Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines, Lakeflow Jobs, Unity Catalog, and Structured Streaming, plus the serverless cost levers.
